F1altums tell me about them!

Love all those with no info to share but feeling compelled to instruct you to search the web, lol. At this day and age, who doesn't know google?

I have a group from Kraig, bred by Tony Tan. They are as hardy and outgoing as domestic angels. Wild altums, on the other hand, are much harder. The reason wild altums tend to crash within the first few weeks (I've seen plenty of that) is that they live in very acidic water with virtually no pathogenic bacterial populations, and therefore have very little immunity against pathogens in aquariums. It's not hard to provide the water they like, but it's hard to make it almost sterile, at least in the early acclimation stage. Once they develop immunity, they are fine in aquariums. I assume tank-bred fish don't have as big of a problem.

There were some questions about whether these tank bred ones were actually altums in the beginning, and I could see why. But as they get bigger and bigger, they look more and more like altums.

As to where to get them from, all tank bred ones were originally from Asia, even those that Jeff imported from Europe. So you will have to either wait for somebody to import them again, or get them from somebody that got them last year from Kraig.

Hope this helps.

Great response and it was very helpful. For the life of me I don't understand why someone would reply with the answer check Google? The original poster likely already checked that out. Some can be so rude but instead could just say I don't know where you can find F1 Altums or simply move on to the next thread. I certainly don't want to see one you those 1 page essays which would probably be all about nothing. There was a thread going over at Angelfish.net about Tony Tan Angels and alot of Folks jumped in on that group buy. They were F1 Altums and some complained about broken bars but not all of them had this trait. The only way I would try them again would be if they were F1's. My wilds a few years back withered up and died withing a few weeks. I know F1's are out there and as the above poster mentioned they are coming out of Asia. If you are serious about these guys you might want to check out Angelfish.net

The F1 Altums from Tony Tan were said to be breed from fish out of the Rio Inirida in Colombia. There was alot of controversy about them being real F1 P. Altum or a cross with Rio Negro Sclare. I think it has been provin to most peoples satisfaction that they are in fact tank/farm bred F1 P. Altum.
