factors that might make the hobby too hard

This thread couldnt have come at a better time... i live in a building and an external gas pipe busted due to leaks from neighbours upstairs....
Long story short, im now waiting to see what happens when i eventually start renovation, coz between the dust, chemicals etc, i have a feeling i may lose a lot of my fish when im done...
in which case i’m almost sure i’ll tear down each tank that crashes on me and probably not turn back for a long time to come even though its super sad for me to think about...

That's how my old monsters died. An F2 tornado hit my old neighborhood. When a tree fell it pulled my meter loose from the house and every bit of the slack with the line inside the basement. It knocked a lot of chemicals I had on shelves into tanks and sumps. Then during repairs I lost more due to what your talking about.
The only things that made it were 3 tanks of cichlids and 2 dart tanks out of 2 car garage full. Then after surviving all that my freaking huge jag goes carpet surfing. I'm just now getting back to wanting to keep true monsters again. Omg the smell.

It was close call for me as gas was leaking 2 days straight into a flat below... luckily someone smelt something was off and called the gas company to check it out and notice the problem...

Lots can go wrong. I’m getting no more depressed by low activity. I can’t believe how few posts there are in the filter section and DIY section. Aside from a few folks seems like all innovation is gone. Maybe I’m a whiner but I created a 530g tank build that has been a year in planning and 15 years of dreaming and I can’t believe how few posts it had 
I guess I petered out. I got up to 26 fish tanks, then came home 1 day and realized I was spending 4-5 hours a day working on the tanks. It was like a part-time job(1995). By 2008, I was down to 1 tank. Since I've bounced up and down(most 4). Right now I'm at 2. I always want to keep at least 1.

Hello; Even tho I am now running four tanks, they are fairly low intensity setups. Would have only two tanks but a couple of years ago I would up with a breeding pair of common angels. Had to dust off two more tanks to accommodate the deformed and less than normal fry I decided not to cull.
Hello; This is true. Being old school and having run tanks with what is now minimal filtration, I never got around to DIYing a filter system. Kudos to those who do work it out.

Well sounds like you have work to do. Post progress pics give everybody a visual of what your doing and what you need help with. Be clear with questions and not bombard with 20 at a time.
I'll use JK as an example. Hes has the art of posting builds to a science. Lots of step by step pics lots detail with little rambling. He's makes it so you can can visualize exactly what he's doing and what he's trying to achieve.
If it makes you feel better, this weekend I'm planning on cutting a hole in the side of a server PSU to bolt on a fan then swapping it onto my DIY LED strip lighting on my tank.
The current power supply's voltage slowly drops over a few weeks until you poke the trim pot, then it goes back up. It's annoying. Also I'm skeptical it will last long running at 150-200 watts when it's rated at 150, but I still haven't put the rest of the strips in.
I had a build log over on fish lore, but I've been permanently banned...
