Fader Killin's

Very nice fish cichcrazy. Although it is a crying shame your sb's wont pair I like the pairing's you were able to accomplish. You should get some sb fry out of each pair, just hold those back for your breeding stock.

I love both of your regular fh, very nice pink/red on that male and awesome pearl's on the female.

I love that not only does your normal length fh have a huge kok the little sb does too, lol! Seriously you don't often see sb male's with such a nice kok. That was a very nice find indeed.

I think 1 and 4 may be female, I'm more sure on number 4 than number 1 but still not 100% sure.

I notice no one really comment's on number 2 in the lineup. It's hands down the most beautiful one, the highest color intensity, the most pearling, the most yellow...I could go on and on.

I definitely need to take more pic's/video and you'll see what I mean.

In order of potential I would list them this way...2, 3, 1, 4...and the only reason 3 comes in second place instead of third is because of his body shape and kok development. Otherwise it would be a tie between 3 and 1

3 is also the largest....starting to really love that fish.

Who am I kidding? I frickin love them all.

I'm really diggin the sb in your avatar Jen, he has a slightly longer (yet still sb) look to him. I have an sb Kamfa that is like that.

I have a theory that growing up in an appropriate size tank is conducive to this body type. I think that some of the more round bodied sb are in a sense made to be that way and not bred to be that way.

Raising fish in small partition's leads to atrophied muscles so severe that it affects the adult body shape. These fish commonly have poor swimming skill's. Think about it...we've all seen the Oscar, Green Terror, Pacu, etc that has a bent tail and an odd shape because the owner thought it could live in a 20 gallon forever.

My first import was about 3-4 inch's when I got him...I raised him to about 5 inch's, alway's in a tank that was at least 3 feet in length. It didn't take long at all before his shape began to change (elongate very slightly) and his swimming became more graceful. Another change I noticed was he didn't look so...lumpy? His musculature just seemed more flowing and definitely much stronger.

My only concern with them breeding is male fertility. They have fader/midas blood from the fh side and parrot/midas from the parrot side...sometimes too much parrot can of course lead to infertile males. Other than that it is preferable to breed sibling's with fh because it fix's the traits much faster/easier. This is done with many fish in the trade Betta's, fancy guppies, Angels, Discus, etc. Any fish you see that has a manmade color morph or body type has invariably been heavily inbred to produce those trait's.

Ironically I have read articles that suggest parrot's have such high infertility (amongst other health problems) due to heavy inbreeding to produce their unique body type.

I re-read that and thought I should add that sb fish probably result from a form of dwarfism. Their spines are very much stunted and in many case's crooked, some have poor swim bladder function and are prone to swim bladder disease.

Hence the importance of growing your stock out as much as possible before you select future breeder's.

Why do you say that Chris? Why would them being from the same batch of fry prevent them from breeding?

Don't have much experience with breeding cichlids so I don't know if they will intentionally inbreed. Some fish actively avoid doing this like gouramies. Isn't inbreeding typically bad? Can't remember if you are trying to breed them with each other or with one of your other cichlids.
