Hey guys, just want to get some information on the Fahaka puffer. Completely new to puffers and i really want a Fahaka. I need Information regarding Pice, Where i can buy, and their temperament. I'm planning to house him in a 240g aro community, any insight would be appreciated. Thanks, Tommy

Okay, first and foremost, if you ARE NOT planning on housing the Fahaka alone, then i wouldn't get one... especially if your mixing it with other expensive fish, coz chances are more likely than not, your fahaka will kill the Aro, its just a matter of time...

On the other hand, if you have a spare 120G tank laying around you could house one of these guys on there own quite happily...

As for price i think it varies from place to place, as for temperament... expect them to be aggressive, very aggressive... so basically chances are anything in the tank with it will end up dead, or possibly as food...

No way.... Those cute little things are that vicious?!?!? I'm guessing the same goes for the mbu puffers eh? Well i got a puffer labled as "arrowhead puffer" at my lfs, i'd like some info on him as well. What kind of puffers you would think would be appropriate for my setup?

^ In all honesty, the only puffer that "MIGHT" work and i use that term loosely is the MBU, although even then they can get vicious with age, not to mention they grow to around 3FT and require a tank of around 800-1000G alone...

As for the arrow head puffer, its definitely a lurker species of puffer which is a piscivore by nature... doesn't really need an exceptionally big tank, around 40G for a singleton...

Any way, if your really keen on getting a puffer, i would suggest you setup a species only tank for one of them, since for the most part these adorable/cute looking fish are vicious killers and quite territorial...(i learnt this the hard way)...

For more profiles on Freshwater Puffers i suggest you check out this link: Pufferpedia lots of great info on requirements and sizes of puffers...

Should also mention they got some great articles on that site which are definitely worth looking into if your set on getting one...

Lucky arrowhead, hes gonna be permanently housed in a 240. Guess my hopes of owning a fahaka is done since i don't like seeing any fish alone in one tank :nilly:, unless its a Super red, metallic xback aro :naughty:

don't under estimate an Arrowhead either. They max out at 6 inches and will attack a fish much larger than itself. They come up from below and go for the nice soft belly ...

You don't necessarily need a 800-1000gallon tank for an mbu... A tank like a 500g should work for a 3ft mbu puffer for life... Glasscages.com sells them for $2310usd and they are 8ft x 4ft x 2ft1" (LxWxH). If you have them build a custom tank for you to make that tank say an extra foot longer that's still only about 560gallons. That should work for an mbu for life (probably as the bare minimum of course).

I second that reference to pufferpedia.. They are pretty much the ONLY all-puffer website with profiles and an active forum dedicated for puffers. The folks there are very polite also... But if you're a new member there be sure to (before you ask any questions on puffers) give them a background on your fish keeping experience or you will get a million questions questioning if you even know how to cycle a tank (why people still bother with biospira is beyond me...huge waste of money).

X2, never underestimate the power of a puffer and its teeth... i've read and heard quite a few puffer horror stories from people, including one from the Pufferforum stating that one members Congo (T.Muirius) tore a pleco more than double its size in half overnight...

So although the arrow head may not seem like it could tear the aro in half, you will have be very very careful it doesn't do any life threatening damage to one either, but thats only if you absolutely must have one in your tank, which imho isn't a great idea (unless its on its own)...

dude, puffers have teeth. if you house your puffer, either the puffer might kill your arows or the arows might fight the puffer and they might die due to the poison of the fahaka.

for short, its a no win situation.
