He said they were one inch and I told him I was interested in a male and female, he didn't say they were too young to be sexable, so I'm suspicious of that. I don't want to end up with two males and I wouldn't be very happy with two females.

I would do the old stand by--buy six, get the best looking pair out of it, get rid of the rest (you shouldn't have a problem selling them).

No suspicion. They breed as prolifically as guppies and are a very common species these days. I've seen them for $2 each locally.
