Fake plants or no fake plants?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I typically like plants, but that tank looks great just the way it is!

I word of caution, if you do get fake ones Pi just may tear them to shreds like Casper did his.

Do you think this setup would benefit from fake plants?

I was thinking of the aquatop silicone plants Val/sword. Even if I did a low tech planted rank, I would have to get new lighting, and deal with more algae. Additionally, cichlids would most likely redecorare/shredd live plants since they are already in the tank and the plants wouldn't be established. I have done several low iron high tech planted tanks and imo they are more maintenance than a reef. So I do not want live plants at this time.

Do u think I should just keep decor as is? I mean with a dark blue background it is never going to look too natural...

I prefer the tank as is.
Your Amphilophus Sagittae is found in Lake Xiloá which is pretty much just rock work with very little vegetation. Vegetation is mostly in the form of algae.

If I ever use plants I do so with species that are found with live plants in their natural habitats.
A few months ago I kept a pair of A. Citrinellus in a lake Nicaragua Biotope that was completely made up of just rock work and a fine pool filter sand.

There was also a group of Neetropulus Nematopus in there for a few months until the A. Citrinellus begun spawning.

Ultimately it is what you prefer most and what is most appealing to you. I will say however, as others have stated. Fake plants will most likely be torn up by your A. Sagittae

I also like the tank as is.
Another note of warning, make sure them branches are sturdy. My Sagittae Casper didn't like branches when I tried with him. He would move them all in a pile on one end. That is another of the reasons I keep Caspers tank so bare. He will rearrange, tear apart anything I put in.

Mine is obsessed with moving the airline and air stone at the moment. He spends most of his day riding the stream to the top and splashing. Once my fish get bigger and a little more rowdy the plan is probably to get rid of the Manzanita, but we will see. I am limited to what type of drift wood I can fit through the acrylic top. I would love a stump in the middle, but do not think I can fit it through the top.

An idea of mine that I have not tried yet.

Pet bird stores carry some bigger hardwood branches for Macaw perches.
I was going to get a couple and try them. Bigger around 2/4 inches diameter, will be harder for Casper to move. Should be safe for fish since intended for birds use.

My Ehiem air pump comes with the emitters. And as you can see, Casper loves ripping them off the back wall. The one on the right is floating as he has ripped it off the glass.20200228_153448.jpg

FYI ..... It's called Java wood, and requires a ton of pre-soaking before it can go in a tank. While presoaking it smells like horse piss. Make sure to read all of my comments in the following past thread, before you try this at home.

I'd get some nice big chunky branches if it was me, just ,are sure they are big enough that the fish can't move them or spike themselves on them. You could try tying some jave fern on them too but I think the fish would end up shredding them.
