Ocean rock is good in african cichlid tanks as it hardens the water and increased the KH/GH which makes the PH more stable.

Dark gravel is not always better & will not always make the color pop as stated earlier. Sometimes the dark substrate will cause the fish to darken up to try & blend in with it. I found this out a long time ago with Yellow Labs, Lamp Leleupi etc..

Tank looks good, Dark back ground okay. Add a atinic light with the day light & looks nice.
