Fake Tetrabits on the Market?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been feeding tetra for 35 years. I've bred many different fish species on tetra as a staple. My individual fish enjoy regular life spans. I wonder why you consider it to be inferior?!

I used to feed my fish with TetraBits and it stained the water slightly reddish. They were authentic product, not fake which I guess stains even more. TetraBits have soft texture that leaks out powderly dust that stains the water. I stopped using TetraBits because of the stain after finding better replacements from New Life Spectrum and Hikari. Why is the label written in Chinese? Tetra food was a German product. Is it made in China now.

Sorry to re insert my background here, but yes, I was in the packaging industry. Companies can't realy sell a product written in English in China, or written in Japanese in Mexico, or written in French in India.

The packers purchase labels that are written in the language of the target country, pack the product and then the products are sold in the target country, Same can, same product, different label.

My company had labels in all sorts of languages, some with different pictures, some with different local requirements ("trans fat content"), and of course, some with local ads (e.g., "Six Flags") which would not appear in other countries. With so many labels all for the same product, it's not uncommon that a typo would slip through. Canadian labels (with French) are not uncommon in the US and I've bought cat food in California in a bag that was written entirely in French, that usually is in English.

Meh. I just think the more expensive brands have a better quality generally speaking. If I have pricier fish I'm gunna feed them the best I can afford. Or the most natural sounding foods. I generally try to avoid crazy preservatives even with my own noms. I am probably going to attempt to make some fresh veggie cube homemade food to test with my guppy fry and tinfoil barb.

I do agree that tetra is pretty cost effective compared to stuff like hikari though haha.

Oh and I'm a bit biased towards hikari, back in the day that was the only brand my friend's dad would feed his cichlid tank, those fish were always beautiful and healthy.

Bootleg fish food actually does take place. I ran into this approx 10 years ago in Asia. At that time it was NLS knock offs being sold.
Tetrabits probably has more lakes and dye than any other food on the market. It's ingredients look more like a recipe for pancakes than something a fish would eat in nature. IMO it's a lower quality feed, that colors fish up to look good.
