he has a point though. the topic starter asked this in the right forum, but now the topic was moved from the right forum to the wrong one thats dedicated to Lepisosteids. isn't it in the best interest of the board to keep topics in the right forums?

yeah...why post them here? why not post them in the piranha forum even? they are more closely related to the hujeta and spotted pike characin. they are as far from a gar as you could get. i'm sure there are better forums to put them in than the gar forum.

I have said this before and I'm not sure why it is such an issue to enforce or explain:

This idea (Lumping Gars with Needlefish and Tetra) seems contrary to the purpose of the forum being in Ancient fish and it is continuing to create confusion and false connections between fish that are nowhere near related.. If you have Belonids and Tetras being accepted as Gar (Lepisosteids) you may as well just eliminate the whole subforum.

If the site is about education it should try and do so in a consistent manner and clearly Identify species relationships in an appropriate manner. Common names are not appropriate to use as a means for inclusion in a given group of fish. By continuing to allow the "asian gars" the "Rocket gars" and the "marble gars" you are promoting misconception and misinformation.

IMO tetras and toothy longnosed rainbow fish are spam in an area designated for Lepisosteids. They are not related and have nowhere near the same in husbandry or behaviors. These fish should be regulated to where they belong and this is not in the company of the ancient Toothy Ganoid fish known as GAR.

Richard (self appointed Gar curmudgeon)

I do not care to be a constant PITA but why is this such a damn difficult thing to understand? COME ON GIVE US GAR PEOPLE OUR OWN FORUM WITHOUT THIS NON RELATED SPAM!!!!

How hard is it??? I mean really.....How hard?

If you want us gar (Lepisosteid) people to get our heads together and fix this so be it. Might help on your part to actually provide support for improving this situation though...

How about start by giving Jordan a position in this forum as a mod so you have someone that will bother trying to improve things.... Just a suggestion....

Where the hell are these people in this forum?
PhullTank57, kido, tyson, IoStrisciare, Steve_89, ezman, RockyGoldy, aapl76, WyldFya

Non of them are active in this forum on any regular basis and really have little respect to those that post here all the time concerning these fish. Having someone that regularly posts and visits here with interest and knowledge of gar would really help in fixing these issues.

lol! interesting thought. why not you or sol? i do agree though...we need a mod that is actually active in the gar forum and is educated and knowledgeable on these fish.

I have no interest in doing so and would never fit this community well anyhow. Too blunt in my methods and too much of a stickler for rules, accuracy and procedure.

I nominate you as the best choice as you are respected here and also have the desire and will to learn, educate others and advance in the art of keeping Lepisosteids in captivity.

Granted you have been slashed a few times by us in the old guard of Gar keeping but your learning and you seem serious. As said before I welcomed you into the CLO group for a reason. We may have some arguments (And expect more) but your attitude and persistence is acknowledged...

that way you and solomon can tear me apart every time i mess up! haha!

I do agree with putting them in 'general' or 'other monster fish' instead of the gars forum, but you could have been more polite, perhaps PM'ing LI or one of the higher mods in this matter instead of bringing this thread completely off topic like you just did.

(don't take this as a negative rant about you polypterus, i really respect your opinion on gars since you are a professional 'gar man' and you take time to post on this forum with nothing but very good info and occasional p.o.'d arguments that still contribute greatly)

anyway to answer the original poster's questions, pretty much any one of the false gars mentioned should work out for you as long as you have a good steady supply of live food as it seems very few can get them off of live foods...
