I'm am currently looking to set up a 38 gallon feeder tank and I was originally going to breed convicts but its come to my attention that they take longer to harvest........I currently have 10 4-5" red belly piranhas 1 12" catfish and I'm searching for 3 barracudas for another tank in the works. Now I am prepared to get another 35 if need be but I just want to know which type of fish will give me the highest yield the fastest.
Well highest yeild and fastest are going to be two different things. As live bearers I believe are the fastest but they don't have huge batches. But if it was me id stick with just a ton of live bearers guppies imo are the easiest of them.

hi i have a 40 gallon set up with a pair of convicts and i get about 40-50 1-1.5 inch fry every month that i use as feeders works well for me. but do guppies produce more or get larger then that in the same period of time?
I would say Guppies and not use as feeders (except bent backs) for 4-6 months until your population is quite high. That way you have a lot of females producing all the time. Then transfer males (except the ones your using for breeding) to a "grow out" tank 10-20 Gallon with just a sponge filter and do all your feeders from there. Just a warning, depending on the type of guppies you choose to breed, you will probably end up with some really beautiful males and not want to feed them to your other fish.
i know its not in the cards for you cause of the size tanks you have, but i have a breeding pair of managuense that breed at least once a month and i get at least 500-1000 fry. they grow faster than convicts too.
If you want something to breed and produce a ton of feeders go with mozambique tilapia. You can get all kinds of tilapia online. Get about 10 or 20 and grow them up til you can tell sex. Then save one male and at least 6 females. You will have to strip females to get the fry from their mouths but you will get 200 or more per batch and a batch per month for each female. They will be feeder goldfish size in a month.

I culture red wiggler worms (AKA composting worms). It's super easy and have more than enough worms for a 50ish tank fishroom from a single Rubbermaid bin. They're safe, disease-free and 70% protein.
Trying to raise and breed enough fish for your purposes in a single tank (or even 2) will be a losing proposition.
Google "red wiggler culture" and you'll get the idea.
its almost cheeper if you count time just to buy a stuffed feeded bag of 300 or what ever then.power feed them your self in a empty garbage.can and air hose lol i get them huge in 2 weeks and it last me a fair bit. i never been able to keep up with my fishies apitite
