Since when are you going to find snapping Turtles in South America?

They're there.......But do you know of any in Private hands?

Lets try this again - The fastest grower is no where near the best looking........

Podocnemis Erythrocephala is probably the best looking out of any of the commerically available Turtles to come out of South America.........But in the grand scheme of things, they have a face only a mother could love........But that is subject to interpretation........

Batagur Baska is one of the fastest growing Turtles I've seen.......But you won't see any commercially available......ever.......

I used to keep Mexican Snappers, not south american but close enough to central american to be included I think.

i love those turts.

fast growing turtles from CA/SA? Definitely snappers, but also all Kinosternids will grow fast. C. angustatus and Staurotypus sp. are incredible growers if kept warm and fed often. But the question is: Why do you want it to grow fast? It is definitely more healthy if the turtle grows at a natural rate!

Snappers do grow incredibly fast. I found mine as a hatchling of about half dollar size, and within a year, his shell is over 6" and his complete length without stretching his neck is around 9"-10". Also, a snapper is going to be larger than most other species of the same carapace length.

What do you consider to qualify a 'looker' in a turtle species. I really love the looks of my snapper for example. Another thing is they aren't hostile at all.

False. Alligstor Snappers are lucky to grow 1" a year.

Correct. Alli snappers grow slow as hell. Commons are the complete opposite.

I completely agree!

As far as growth, yeah I'd say sliders and snappers. There are people who do keep Equadorian snappers that show up occasionally for sale. In fact some of them have some cool coloring as well. Nothing spectacular though.

As far as the "best looking" that is going to vary greatly, everyone likes something different.

A good looking ,fast growing turtle I'd suggest is a Hilaire's Side-necked turtle. They do get huge.
