I go to New Orleans fairly often. Its a pretty nasty place. At the end of the parade this year, there was what looked like 4" of water backed up into the streets. All of that poo poo water mixed with rain, beer, puke, and pee pee is not something you want soaking into your shoes and pants. 
Even when it's not Mardi Gras, it stinks and is rather trashy... I would have to be completely wasted to enjoy myself, and that's part of the recipe for jail and STDs.. No offense to Nola inhabitants.

If you've never been there, I'd suggest going at least once before you die.
