So i got a 209 gallon tank up and running and used water out of my swimming pool the oscars were in. The first pic shows a circle on the remaining silver dollar. The disease started as a circle on the oscars too. I have a couple pics of my male bahia red tail that died. First one to kick was a silver dollar. Had slightly cloudy eyes then just died when my bro and i were looking at the tank. My pair of bahia red tails died and a cheap red oscar died as well. No clue what it is but it spread like fire and killed the oscars in 2 days. It started as cloudy eyes so i dosed the tank with pimafix and melafix for a week. Seemed to be almost all cleared up so i thought i was out of the woods. Stopped dosing tank, did a 50% water change and pic 2 is day 2 of new flare up in the morning, pic 3 is the disease before bed time and pic4 is the following morning of day 3.

When i scooped him out he pretty much fell apart. Most of the skin and some chunks of his body fell off. Never seen a disease like this before that spread so fast and pimafix/melafix didnt cure.

Looks like columnaris. A real nasty bacterial infection. It can wipe a tank out in a few days. Melafix/primafix wouldn't do anything to help. You will need a stronger med like Marycyn or something similar.

Alright thanks for the help. Im going to drain the tank after that last silver dollar kicks and i bought all new filter media so hopefully i wont run into this again. Ill have to keep marycyn on hand as well. Thanks again.

Columnaris (flexibacter - gram-negative)) I just pulled a large male Paraneetroplus breidohri from the brink of death. Start treatment right away by:
1. isolating the fish, making sure to use cooler water (~75F) and increase aeration.
2. Using a combination of Kanamycin (specific to gram-negative), and furazolidone/nitrofurazone (treats gram-positive (secondary infection) and gram-negative as well (Furan-2 from API) added to the water in the recommended dose. Also, even though kanamycin is absorbed through the skin of the fish, once he starts eating, soak some food in kanamycin and get him to ingest it.
3. Don't give up. It may take a week or so for improvement to be noticed (ie may get worse before it gets better).
4. If secondary fungus appears, I use methylene blue and/or pimafix. Also salt (1 tbsp per 5G) is effective against flexibacter too. Your case is going to be severe and if not treated, it's just a matter of time (can be sickeningly quick) before death occurs.

Good info. Good luck.

Post water perameters. Ammonia, nirtite, nitrate and ph.
This is columnarus. Do a 50% water change, lower the water temp to 72-75 and add salt at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. Your water perameters will dictate the best med for this. Furan 2 is good at lower PH levels of ~7.2 and lower at Higher ph Triple Sulfa is a better choice. The combiation of Kanamycin & Furan 2 is great combination, Kanamycin can also be combined with 3X sulfa for use in high ph where Furan 2 is ineffective. If you lower the temp add the salt and change the water you sould be ok with either the Furan 2 or 3X sulfa depending on the Ph if you can not get Kanamycin.

If you can't get meds till morning it is imperative you lower the temp and add the salt to slow it down. It will kill quickly if you don't.

A study found in the second link that I posted previously. (http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/columnaris_disease.php#[4])

Characterization of four Flavobacterium columnare (Flexibacter columnaris) strains isolated from tropical fish.

Decostere A, Haesebrouck F, Devriese LA.
SourceLaboratory of Veterinary Bacteriology and Mycology, University of Gent, Merelbeke, Belgium.

The following are confirmed drugs of choice for this disease ...... chloramphenicol, erythromycin, furazolidone, kanamycin, lincomycin, nalidixic acid, oxytetracycline and streptomycin.

The sooner that you begin treatment, the greater the chances of your fish surviving.

If you ever run across this again get the temp down ASAP add the salt and get to the store as fast as you can for meds. It almost kills right before your eyes it's that fast in warm water. The cool water and salt will slow it down but wouldn't stop it.

This thread is sad. Meth blue will work as well. It will kill your be as well though.

I saw that first hand when the silver dollar that barely looked affected died in front of us. Thanks for the info.
