fatheads/rosy reds

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fathead minnows are very easy to breed and are actually quite interesting. I wrote an article on how to do it. It was a sticky in the native forum here but they removed it...shortly after my moderation career ended, odd. Anyway. You can try to find it, its in there somewhere.

I'd go with guppies as feeders. Worse case scenario is you go to a LFS, pick out the fattest females and have a batch of babies to raise. Nice avatar pic tho- I like those oyster toadfishes

if not guppies, use mollies or if you have a larger tank that can be divided if necessary, a couple pairs of convicts.

Fatheads (rosies) are not good as a steady diet due to high levels of thiaminase which prevents absorbtion of vitamin B1, leading to muscular atrophy. As occassional treats they are okay, but not as a main diet.

yea its a rare catch i think i caught 2 or 3 this year it was basically imploded ( it bladder) when it got to the sruface bottom was around 220, basically jig the day away when the fishing for monster tuna is slow which is always

yea i was never considering it as a foodsource just a snakc maybe once a week or less, feed market shrimp krill silversides and pellets

I get some smaller ones off a pier in Brooklyn. Fun to stick your fingers in their mouths at that size. I wouldn't try it with any over six inches or so though.

yea im guessing this "thing was 17 inches or so but agian its in the atlantic, some weird fishs down at like 200 feet ill post some more next time i get out

feeders are about 12 cents here

Around here 12 cents each but 10 for a dollar.

Sidenote for voss- you have your own boat or do you go on party boats? I do mainly shore fishing and party boats, not a fan of the $55 per 8 hours though.
