Nice, is that 5 males to possible 2 females? I still can't get over how mine spaze so much. (I was taking photos about 2 feet from the tank... and you can see on the last photo how much they were hitting everything.)

Mine were from one of the farms associated with Xtreme fish foods.

(And the deal were good to get... but man it hurts to be the seller.)

Wow I wish I had come across this thread a long time ago haha I think I just changed my mind on the plan of my tank...

Just curious, how much do you guys usually spend on these fish? I mean if I wanted to get a male of some of these what would I be looking at spending? I wouldnt mind getting them young in a small group if that was cheaper and kept whatever turned out the be the best as they grew.

In such a set up is it okay to have two fish that would possible be the same color? Maybe not the exact same but something like a red shoulder peacock and a blue ahli or would the not show their best colors because they are both blue? Or would you be able to keep 2 red rubys or because they are pretty close to the same they would always be fighting and not show best colors?

I thought I would toss a few pictures in as well...these are not really recent as I have been gone and so crazy busy. But I hope to get more taken this week.

look nice, the haps and peacocks would show color... small for red shoulder? 3-10 for some small ones

He must be about 4" right now, he seems to be a bit of a slow grower, but I am hoping the recent switch to NLS will help that out. That price isnt to bad, now I need to find a 30L i guess haha

So in general, larger fish cost more... but well you know they are good looking fish, plus you don't have to wait years. Of course buying adults makes tank mixing harder.

And if you buy young, well if you get females it is very hard to tell them apart... So I would suggest geting juvi males that are just starting to show color. (IE for the max color an all male tank is the best way to go.) Also try to stay away from two of the same types, or very similar coloring. While they both might eventually show color, trully when a male starts to become fully dominate, all others of its type will show at best half there color.

As for a good estimate on prices... Look at erik dykes webpage. You can find local fish in you club cheaper, though you wont get the selection unless you are lucky. (IE like today grabs, or my Exo which cost me for 4 the same price it would have cost me for 1 male.)

I would highly suggest against you local LFS, unless you know them and they aren't setting crazy prices like ours down here do. (150 for a crappy Lwanda is my best example... At the auction today 3 of my lwandas went for a buck... and given 2 years they would have been a match in looks for the ACA winner.)

Also get rid of the ruby red females... Unless you want to make just an breeder tank somewhere, and have one male really showing and the rest not.

Yeah thats what I think I am going to do. Put the females in a breeder and then go with all male. I have 2 ruby red males, the rest are female. I thought one of the males was a female, so now I am trying to decide which to stay with, one will be going. I am going to have to start checking out the GCCA events around here and see what I can find for more males.

Holy smokes, 150.00 for a crappy lwanda?? Geesh, what a rip off. They shouldn't even be allowed to sell African Cichlids.. Someone needs to do a miller lite on them, LOL!!
