None of my favorites are great "starters".

The V. prasinus..., Green Tree Monitor, esp. the "blue" phase.
The V. giganteus..., Perentie

Most Niles I have seen have been pretty mean. All the large savannahs I have seen have been very tame. My Savannah is very tame and he is trained to get in and out of the sink to take baths to remove his shedding skin :) Get them used to the pet carrier when young it makes life a lot easier just like it would with a dog or cat.

harlequin moniter looks great when juvenile but loses its bold orange head colouration when it grows.

i have two monitors.a nile and a savannah.my nile is very timid, but still cool/.you have to like them to keep themthe scratches they leave behind are brutal when they r older.mine is still on the small side.my sav. is still a baby but they do seem to have a more calm tempermant than other monitors.my first sav was the calmest lizard iv owned.my leopard gecko was more jumpy tham him.

the nile is still my favorite monitor.you can use them as alarm systems, cause they hiss so loud.they need alot of room though unless you stunt them on purpose.my bro bought one that was stunted, there was nothing wrong with him except that nobody ever held him so he was mean.they get like seven feet long, maybe they were thinking hed be easier to handle small.he wasnt

i have worked with monitors for many years now good starters are savannah monitors, black throats and if you have the room water monitors are great, dont get a niles/crocks and emeriald greens as the niles and crocks tend to bite a lot ( welders gloves only work for so long) savannahs and blck throats do bite and poop esp when you first get them
as for the emerialds they cost over $1000 and more then %50 of them die off ( yet to be mass cb)all of those you see for sale were imported
i have 6 savannah monitors and two asain monitors all are great pets , but i have to give most of my fl poarch to the water monitors. there is a site i can tell you about .....though i dont think admin would like me posting it here im sorry :( but try kingsnake with a dot and a com and look up their care sheets and you will be able to get a lot more info on what you are in search of

good luck and enjoy

When you get your Savannah Monitor, dont forget to feed him nothing but bugs. Yep, bug. maybe a mouse once a month but in capitvity our job is to duplicate their natual diet. Dont believe anyone who tells you other wise.
