golem is going to work on this thing! dang! everytime i go to answer a question, golem already has it in the bag lol nice job man but leave a little work for me too XD

ive decided to test the people of yahoo by posting questions about monster fish and seeing if and how they answer them. they will be questions that are very simple to us, and we'll see how they respond.

Gary C answered incorrectly to the test question, and he is a "top contributor"

for those of you who dont know. the test question is:
Can i buy an arowana?

ive got a 450 gallon tank. it is 15 feet long, 2 feet deep, and 2 feet tall. is my tank big enough to buy a silver arowana and keep it for life or do i need a bigger tank?

the correct answer should be:

No, silver arowanas can reach up to 40"+ and need at least 3' of turning space. the tank has the correct water volume, but lakes the ammount of depth to keep a silver arowana.

I'm Catxx on YA too. Got your BA for that test Q there, cheers! It is tricky over there. Been there donkey's years now, it's like an addiction/self harming in a way haha! I do repeat myself over and over and if I got £1 for every time I mentioned cycling/the nitrogen cycle I would be absolutely minted by now.

Ah well. The more genuinely educated fishkeepers on YA the better!!! There is one you need to watch out for - Robert who claims to be an Ichthyologist, except if you counted up the qualifications he has on his profile he would have got one of those age 12, has some exceedingly dodgy answers too. Drives me a bit mad that one. Exhibit A:

so this simpley means that the only one to give a good answer was actually a MFK, further proving my point.

and like i said, the people asking about their guppies in ten gallons arent the ones im worried about because the people of yahoo can take care of that. the ones im worried about are the ones asking about aros, rtc's, lungfish, large central/south american cichlids, etc because the people of yahoo cant take care of that which means that itll turn out bad for both the fish keeper, and even worse for the fish itself.

one of the answers i got from that test question was this:
"You cant put the fish in there because it wouldnt have turning room. That tank would be great for a school of pacus though. You could get like 10 pacus, an iridecent shark (cuz sharks are cool), a bunch of mono sabae (they get big and school!), and maybe even a redtail catfish!"

imagine if someone were to listen to that advice, which im sure many do. it is things that this that prove that we need to have some MFK out and about in other sites, ESP YAHOO, to either help or fwd people to the mother site (MFK)

im not talking about silly question lol i mean when people ask questions about monsters on yahoo. theyll never get good advice then. like this guy
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110315212545AAzx8TP
tell me that he shouldnt be on here asking that instead of yahoo

i was refering to the examples given and how there were correct answers. in the example you gave above, i honestly don't expect their to be good answers on that site within 24 hours since it's barely over a day old.

you are correct that those people are seeking advice on the wrong area of the interweb. 8 times out of 10 if you post a question or key words in google you'll end up back on mfk, not yahoo answers.

it's a good cause, have fun with it.

theres no point of yahoo answers when you got MFK!!!
