Scientists do it all the time, never seen one in a private home though. We had a guy in our lab that would get board and call all of us into his cuttle fish lab and put a checker board in the water under one of his cuttle fish to see what it would do.
It did the same thing every time, and honestly, it never got old.... damn it was funny!
Yes the cuttle fish does assume a checkerboard pattern! But it takes a lot of switching on and off of its chromatophores to get the pattern right, it literally makes its self black and white squares but then has to sort of move the squares around to get the pattern straight... whole process takes less than 20 seconds. They get faster and faster at it... the first time it takes almost a min.
