I am getting fed up with the algae in my buttikoferi tank.I am constantly doing water changes and wiping glass.what can it be.It seems to clear up after water changes and the next day its cloudy.:irked: :irked: :irked:

What are your water parameters? Is your tank in direct or partial sunlight? What size tank is it and what filter do you have? How long do you leave the light on? How much water do you remove during a partial water change? When is the last time you cleaned your filter and is it working properly? What size tank is it and how many fish are in it?

Sorry for all of the questions, but we have to know certain things in order to give you an answer properly. Answer all questions possible!;)

Could be a few things. Most commonly it is direct sunlight, lighting left on too much, and overfeeding, also high nitrates. Does your tank get direct sunlight, how long do you leave your lights on, how about your feeding habits, and have you tested your water quality?

What is your ammonia/nitrite/nitrate before and after your water changes.

Is the tank cycled? What are the water parameters? Tried Purigen? Is there too much light from a window or the lights in too long?

need better biological filtration

An algae bloom isn't from not enough bio filtration. I have a Penguin 150 and a Penguin 170 on my 20 gallon and still had a bloom. I had my tank in partial sunlight, which caused it. How long since the gravel has been vacuumed? Not enough mechanical filtration can cause this, too.

I'm wondering if it is an algae bloom or just ammonia from big fish/small tank and overfeeding.

He said green and cloudy, so that typically means free floating unicellulat algae in the water which is too small to remove with a power or canister filter. A diatom filter is used in extreme cases.

I didnt see mention of green
