Over the years, I've had individual fish that came up with unique ways of letting me know when they wanted a treat.

A Mbu puffer used to spit water at me, when I walked by his tank, to get my attention.

Another Mbu used to dance in front of the tank (swim with quick jerks left and right). He also did quick inflations and deflations during his dance to get my attention.

When some of my rays saw me approach, they'd swim to the surface and start smacking their pectorals on the glass near the surface to beg for food.

Aside from the all too common rushing to the front of the tank when your fish see you, what unusual ways have any of your fish developed to garner your attention for treats and feedings?

My porcupine puffer spits water too.
My remora sometimes does this weird vibrating thing on the surface to try to get my attention.

I used to keep the water about two inches from the top for my sen, his favorite way of telling me he was hungry was making the leap out of the water across the top of the tank and landing with a loud splash on the other side. All very entertaining, he would make loops when my friends came over until I fed him.

my 3 fire eels dance around the front of the tank to get my attention then poke their noses out at me and follow me back and forth. they get themselves so worked up sometimes they start nipping at each other in aggitation while I get their worms cut-up. then settle down and behave while I give them each their portions, knowing I won't feed unless they "behave".

my 2 sens do something similar but it involves the loops as described above, and lack of aggressive displays. the big one now will also literally propel itself off the bottom and race around like a nuttball.

my big Oscar tries to lip lock at me threw the glass, then will come up and "hit" the top of the water. He's splashed me good a few times. settles right back down once he gets his dinner.

My TSN also "paces" back and forth at the front of the tank when I walk into the room. But settles down once he realizes he's getting fed, or not. I swear Is ee the gears turning as he watches me feed the rest of the tanks. and prolly learned to pace from the eels or Oscar. The day he starts begging won't surprize me.

Not sure if its a sign or instinct but my aro becomes territorial and aggressive at the opening where I throw food in if she thinks its feeding time!

Gr8 question Phil....

my old jewel i had use to swimming backwords shaking its tail, then when id feed itd attacl then go back to swimming backwords shaking its tail. my oscar will use its tail to spash water at the lid.

my big niger catfish lets me know hes hungry , by smacking the airstone ball against the glass , til he is fed !! spoiled rotten ..

my jumbo loaches beg like puppy dogs in a big group , up and down , up and down , over and over !! and of course they get what the want ..lol

my rtg just goes to his feeding spot anytime im near the tank , fish related or not !! lol

great thread ..btw

at first it was just 1 ray but when the rest saw 1 doing it they decided to join in and now all my rays start swimming upside down at the surface of the water. they will even let you hand feed them or tickle their belly when they swim upside down. my marble does a 10-15 minute swim at the surface without touching the sand and when she needs a break she floats on one of the bubbles disk at the surface and thats when she lets you pet her. pretty awesome and prolly why i keep teasing her. such a beauty to see a ray swim gracefully at mid level and top level.

my Jar does the usual "yawn" and a stare and swims still as in fill my mouth with worms, then he starts jumping at the glass tops as i hang worms for him so he can jump at them...dont know if he swims still in the same exact spot cause of the rays but its his usual feeding area..

and surprisingly my dats actually great me. all my diff tigers comes out and do the up down dance motion. there is one IT i saved from deaths door that swims unothrodox so instead of up/down he goes to the top and floats sideways or hangs upside down. its his way of feed me first before you feed the others. he's the smallest and i do believe his growth is stunted and he will stay 2"...

and my turtle gives me the butt when she is hungry...

and of course my all time favorite is my community Oscar tank. they knew how to beg, spit, make noise, bang the glass, try to bite you, follow you, beg with big eyes, stir up the sand in the tank, dislodge heaters, dislodge airbubbles, beg some more, rip up decor, etc...they were masters at getting my attention to fix the tank then feed them...i hated them but loved them..LOL

Laosy Fish...

my old chinese perch used to come to the top of the tank and break the water's surface using his mouth. He would basically bite at the surface to make loud popping noises to get my attention.
