feed my fish

doze anyone know what would be the cheapest way to feed my redtail cat fish he's about 6 inches long every night when i turn the tank light off some one is gone in the morrning

U would be best off buying a minnow trap from sports authority or the bait shop and using that in ponds.. Or you can go out and catch worms or u can buy shrimp from the bait stores its cheap

If the fish are small enough to fit in it's mouth, they'll be gone.
Try buying fish fillets, shrimp, beefheart, and smelt.
That's how I feed my fish, and my food bill isnt too high

You can go to a local fishing store and bait is usually much cheaper than pet store fish food (probably twice as good as well). So I will second the fishing stores idea.

But a 6" catfish should not leave you with a major dent, what do you plan on doing with an adult?

i'm trying to find a 300 gallon tank that will fit threw my door but i'm not sure try to sell him or put him in my friends pond

if your friend's pond is outside it will die during the winter. 300 gal is probably too small for an adult, but would work fine for a juvey for a few years til you can get some bigger accomodations.

We have a bunch of members who keeps adults and from the sounds of it a 300 simply will not cut it. Sorry I can not remember the name but a guy here is moving his RTC from a 450 to a 650 tank because it is outgrowing it, and the rest are in ponds. That thing will simply bust the glass.

ok you show me a 300 gal that is 4ft x 10ft x 3ft, and I will say that it is fine. 4ft is the bare minimum for width. That is considering that your redtail will be just average as an adult. Anything smaller is way to cramp and the fish will not be able to turn right or at all as an adult. Even if it was 300 gal pond that would be pushing it, but they do have a bigger footprint. A 300 gal might be fine for 5-10 years if you don't feed too often, but 10-20 years down the road when it is 4ft or bigger you are gonna want more room. I have seen redtail catfish adults kept in 300 gal aquariums as adults and it wasn't nice to look at. They barely any room one was almost 5ft, and the other like 4ft. They had sores on their bodies that were obviously from rubbing against the glass. Their tales were bent back from the tight turning radius. Other than that they were completely healthy if that's they way you like your fish to look go for it.
