I got a Pleco in my finance's tank a few weeks ago. Is it normal for them to hide most of the time? I see him come out sometimes late at night, other then that he's always hiding. He's pretty small, should I try and throw a couple of vegetables, lettuce in the tank?

Should I try feeding other items? I really had no idea plecos ate such a variety of foods. We went lfs because my fiance wanted to get some sort of cat fish and she ended up getting a pleco. The fist one was dead the next morning. We went back to the lfs and they gave us the new one. I'm getting 2 stingrays in my tank next week and I was looking through the stingray section when I noticed there was a pleco section. I feel really bad not knowing that the pleco eats a lot of other things. I feel like I'm starving the poor fish.

I have a bunch of vegetables, and romaine lettuce. Should I throw a couple in the tank? If so how long do you leave them in if he doesn't eat them right away?

Try some sliced of zuchinni.
Tie it to a small rock with a rubberband and put it near it's cave.
Bet you he'll like that!
Algaewafers are a favorite food too.
I got some species hiding during the day, some that allways hide and some that are allways moving around.
Totally depends on the fish.
Provide them with enough places to hide, and eventually most of them show.
You can try putting some nightlights on your tank, so you can watch the fish at night.
My first setup had a small refridgerator light on top, now I use those Xmas blue LED lights and I watch my plecos many times at night! They will still move around if the tank is dimly lit.

I'm going to head to my lfs and pick up some algae wafers. I threw a cucumber in. I'll leave it in for a while to see if he'll eat it. I'll stop at the grocery store and pick up some zucchini too.

The key to getting any pleco in a LFS is to see if their Eyes, and belly are sunking in.. Here is an example of a wild caught specimen
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?species=baryancistrus+beggini&image_id=7160

This means that the pleco is on the verge of dying and should not be brought back to any tank.. Usually in LFS.. fish are not feed to the greatest and pleco needs alot of care.

One important thing to know is that Plecos are organized into three subgroups: Wood eaters, meat eaters and algae eaters
Usually you will run into Algae eaters in store.. the other two subgroups are often rare and not common in LFS..

For pleco diet. i suggest going to this sticky posted by another member. It will show you want plecos need to eat.

The eyes to not look like the one in the link. I'll try and get a picture up. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29993

If you look at the 5th picture down my pelco, looks very similar to that one. Just a lot smaller.

Yellowish green ? Sorta look like a shark ?

Like this? Describing the color might help..
