Get a "small" tank and a pair of breeder convicts!

Agreed, even a 20G will produce 100's and 100's of fry... i got 2 pairs in my 55 with an extra female. and both pairs hgave eggs and fry at the same times...

Any convict will work....

I have read that goldfish and carp along with most White sea foods (calamri,shrimp,ect..) contain thiaminase but have never heard that rosies or fat heads also contain it could you link me to that info guppy.

The best thing is definitely for live food to be a treat a varied diet is crucial for healthy and happy fish

Think about what would happen to you if all you ever ate was cheeseburgers your favorite food. You may like them a lot and they sure fill you up but you would become very unhealthy in the long run.

LOL, ya you can breed in a small tank, but unless you want to feed you fish little 1/8 inch feeders you need to have tanks for growing out. It take 5-6 months to grow to the 3/4-1 inches feeder size. Currently my feeder convict breeding program consists of four tanks 1-55g, 1-29g, 1-20g and 1-10g I also have an extra 20g if needed. The positive of this is I can be sure my Aro is eating healthy fish I can also sell extras to LFS for .25 each.

Remember though the feeder fish should only be a part of the diet, feed good quality flakes, pellets and frozen. I also feed the feeder fish right before he becomes a meal.

That kinda makes me feel bad for eating two 20oz burritos today, but not really. The key to healthy fish is a variety of clean foods. So market shrimp, QT feeders, ghost shrimp, pellets, freezedried and frozen.

Here is an excerpt from an article in Aquariumfish magazine

Do lionfish need live feeder fish?
Although it can be interesting to observe lionfish consuming feeder fish, feeder fish do not provide a nutritionally complete diet. It may be necessary to feed your lionfish live food initially, such as live ghost shrimp, fiddler crabs, freshwater crawfish, feeder guppies, mollies, or even cardinalfish or damselfish. Unfortunately, many aquarists feed their lionfish live feeder goldfish.

This is probably the worst possible choice. Raw goldfish flesh contains thiaminase, an enzyme that causes the breakdown of thiamin. If you feed your lionfish a diet that consists only of goldfish, they may become thiamin deficient. This can result in feeding cessation, clamped fins and problems with the nervous system. Yes, I have seen lionfish kept a number of years and fed only live feeder fish, but you are more likely to have success if you do not feed your lionfish live feeder goldfish. I prefer feeding live ghost shrimp to newly acquired lionfish. Before you introduce the shrimp to the lionfish tank, feed these crustaceans a nutritious frozen prepared food. Then, feed the shrimps to your lionfish. This is known as "gut packing"; you are packing the guts of the shrimp with nutrients that will be passed on to the predator consuming the shrimp.

hmmmm very interesting, the aro and aba aba like live river shrimp & other live foods & the aro likes frozen black mozy larvae eggs. its just more a concern for the aba aba as he mainly eats the shrimp and feeders although he has now ripped chunks off plants and taken a whole plant in under the bogwood like a nest, so I'm thinking hes is actually a she or they are a-sexual aaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh.

Goldfish, rosie reds, and fatheads all can cause thiamine defficiencies, look up thiaminase on google. mollies and platies are much better long term, though if only used as treats any quarantined feeder works. I like live smelt as feeders for freshwater fish as very few diseases transfer salt to fresh, and it saves on the salted quarantine schtick.

Are guppies and swordtails ok too?

iv always herd that you should feed your carnivorous fish Rosy minnows instead of goldfish because goldfish are high in sat fat and they are less healthy for fish to eat.
