it seems one rule for mammals and another for fish.

No flaming, but aren't mice and rats mamals also?

I believe that all the "frozen" foods were live animals at some time too! IMO the animal probably does not feel any better about a human takeing it out of it's natural environment to use as food (for any animal including us) as it would being "eaten" in any other link on the food chain.

I am an avid fisherman, but I have never thought that I enjoy the reverse being done to me. Think about it, we "lure" them into a hook in the mouth, take them out of their element "water" and stuffed into a cooler with ice and air!

Morality issues aside, I've been feeding goldfish to my predator catfish for decades with rarely a problem. Catfish are somewhat immune to ich,the most common infestation with goldfish. Once I got some with anchorworm and had to treat the tank for them. One good thing about goldfish is that they are like goldmine canary's in that they go belly up when there's an ammonia spike, letting you know when it's time for a water change. A problem with using cut frozen fish is that it can get under driftwood and create a huge fungus colony and catfish can have bigger problems with fungus. Some cats like tsn's, tigrinus, jau, yarelli's, apurensis and fowleri's are very hard to wean off live foods when in community tanks competing with scavenger cats who scarf up the frozen fish chunks and pellets so goldfish have worked well for me, with the exception of the ridiculous $$ I spend on them...

My bichir got feeders if I was going to be on vacation, and as an occasional treat, maybe three to five times a year. She was healthy, she died from a random freak-out, not any sort of deficiency or health problem. Otherwise, she ate a variety of shrimp pellets, frozen shrimp, salmon, tilapia, and the occasional piece of cucumber.
