i read in the pirahna forum that goldfish are bad to feed to fish. what fish are ok to feed to fish i usually feed my jack dempsy rosy reds are those ok?

Any Feeder Fish are good for entertainment purposes only, IMO.

A varied diet is the best thing you can feed.

Rosies are better then Goldfish. Mollies are better then Rosies. All 3 of them are not nutritional, however.

I feed my arrowans frozen silversides, live crickets (lots), the occasional lizard i find in the yard and a good quality pellet food like Hikari. Within one year my silver arrowanas grew from 4 inches to 12 on this diet,( mind you this is in a 240 gallon tank) plus they have a great red to pinkish coloration and they are extremely docile due to hand feedings i give them.

For a Dempsey? A good staple diet would be to combine a mixture of the red/green hikari cichlid pellets. Choose an appropriate size, make sure it's not too big. It might take him a few days to take the pellets, but if you have to starve him, he will be ok. Another treat that you can keep on hand is freeze-dried krill, he should like it alot. Don't let him get too used to it though, as he will become spoiled and refuse pellets.

There is a ton of treats you can feed your fish, but if you make them a staple, you will go poor. Such alternatives as Frozen Krill, Beefheart, Bloodworms, Mysis Shrimp.. The list goes on and on. However, I find a mixture of QUALITY Cichlid Pellets (the more variety in the mixture, the better) is the best daily use food. I usually feed frozen specialty foods on the weekends.

He should promote better coloration with a more nutritional diet, and good water quality will always help too!

Good Luck!

guppies and ghost shrimp! both can be readily bought at LFSes for like 10 cents each. cichlid pellets are by far the cheapest food to use, though.

i think guppies are better then mollies.... and i think they have no nutritinal value at all too so what i do is i over feed the guppies new life spectirum till they are about to expload and i feed them to the fish but that is only on occasion.... and for picky fish... so the fish that doesnt eat pellets will still in a way eat pellets.... but too much fat is in feeders

I have been buying mollies and platties in bulk from a LFS.. keep them in a 30 gallon tank for a week or so and feed them all sorts of stuff.. Then I feed 20-30 at a time to the dats pbass gar it seems to be pumping them up.. of course they also eat shrimp and freeze krill.. still workin on the pellets...

Platies

Mollies

Swordtails

Guppies

ScissorTails

Gouramis for the more hungry and larger.

These are just a few examples don't ever use goldfish they live in copper loaded waters basicly use any small tropical spieces that can fit in your fishes mouth that won't harm your fish that is.
