Hey guys. I bought 2 dozen feeder guppies for my vacant 10 gallon tank to quarenteen for my future armatus. It seems that they are like the hardest fish to keep. i've kept bichirs, wolffish and angel fish and i can't keep guppie!!! My feeders just keep dying by small number very day. When i net them out, they have this disguisting fussy stuff on them and they are half rotting away!! Is this the cause of fungis or bacteria?? I put pimafix and salt in my tank right right. I just started to put the heat today (I got the guppies on wedsday) because the LPS guy said they don't need heaters. I think the problem of the guppy death would be no proper heating or my messed up filter. I just took my filter from my cellar and I cleaned it thoughly. The thing is, when I turned it on, black flakes splewed out and my water turn a slight grey murky colour. What happened?? I just washed my filter again with hot water and changed 50% of the water. After an hour, I saw that another guppy has died!!:nilly::nilly: Is it stress this time??

What should I do???
Help

Luckily there is 1 LFS that I get my guppies from that pretreats them w/ salt an furazone which you can't really get anymore. I would use cycled water from one of your other tanks in your 10 gallon and treat them w/ salt and something for bacteria/fungus if I were you.

My guess is that you pick up bad batch of feeder guppies, as they are usually kept in crowded tanks.

Exactly, the pet shop it get my feeders from doesn't really carry the fish that we keep, but their tanks are pristine and so are their pre treated feeders. I even started a colony in our pond.

Ya I know. My lps is total cr@p. They have like a 15 gallon with like more than 100 guppies. The water there is legit grey and half rotting guppies are floating everywhere. It's the only LPS in my city. I always get my fish from a different city.

So Do i just add aquarium salt and pimafix?? So a bad batch of guppies just die off??

Guppies need the same kind of heat, clean water, healthy filtration and disease treatments as any other tropical fish.
sorry.

i think I realize the culprit. The suction of the filter is to big so it sucks my guppies on the grill tube and they can't get out. They are stuck there until they die. Re guppies too weak to swim out of a sucking tube grill?? Hop you guys know what I mean LOL

Only sick and diseased guppies are too weak to swimming out of the sucking tube. Like I said before, you have bad batch. Healthy feeder guppies are hardiest fish I ever owned.

You can't keep yours alive, I can't get anything to eat mine! I put 3 doz in a 10 with ACF's and fancies, 10gal whisper filter, sent all but 6 w/my fiance, he flushed them. the 6 I kept I lost 2 of the 4 females, but I still had both males. I threw them in the turtle tank. They were in with a clown knife, and now they're in with bettas. I just keep my water clean, make sure there's plenty of air going and food. They SHOULD be good. Sometimes they can get stuck if the filter is too powerful. I've even had a rosey red stuck to my intake earlier today. good luck!
