Feeder guppies are so friggin hard to keep!!Need help ASAP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a sponge on my uptake tube.. to keep the fry from being sucked up.. but yeah.. guppies need heat.. and a cycled tank like any other fish.. pimafix + salt prolly not a good idea.. melafix alone should be good to treat any bacterial infections. i keep some floating plants in the tank, and a BN pleco since it gets alot of direct sunlight... a tank is a tank.. feeders or otherwise it needs to be balanced.. once you get a colony settled they are pretty resiliant fish but i did have a few deaths with my initial batch.

If they are feeder guppies, Are they really worth medicating.
Here is an option for you. I tried feeder guppies, And they were just too small. :(
So I turned around and bought a dozen or so pregnant fancy guppies.
You know, The big breeder ones. And 4 of the largest males I could find.
then I plastered three of the walls with suction cup ivy/plants.
Then once a month or there about. transfer the adults to a new tank.
Move the ivy/plants to the new tank. Let the fry grow out.
And start the process over.

As your fry grow out, You pick which ones to keep. Develop new strains.
Make it fun. I made a different color combinations of cobras.

Within a few months, I had hundreds. And really came up with some wild combination.
Traded a lot of them back to my LFS for supplies. And by keeping the fastest growing, Largest offspring.
You get a stronger line.

Just food for thought.

why is pimafix and salt a bad idea??? does it kill them?

i like your idea but my lps is so bad!! It's the only lps in my city so they have no competition. They rack up the prices like no tommorow!!! A make fancy guppy is like 5.99!!! females are like 3.99!!
The lps in the next city sell male for like 2.99 for 2!!!

For feeders I just set up a large tank (think trashcan) outside, put some floating aquatic plants like water lettuce and let them breed feeding them once in a while with anything I can find. The guppies I use are found native in rivers around here so they're accustomed to the temperature but I've seen that the longer I keep them breeding, the smaller they get. When I started (six months ago) they measured 2-3 inches but now the average is under an inch for males and an inch for females.

If they are "feeder" guppies then they most likely aren't healthy. I had the same problem and I told the girl and she said they weren't made to live and they die quick.

pimafix is an anti fungal and ime can damage fish, particularly air breathers.. guppies often swim at the surface and skim it... ive rarely needed to use melafix at full dose.. and have used it in 1/2 dose more then once.. i usually 1/4 the dose for pimafix.. add salt to this and your putting alot of stress on the fishes body. melafix is used as an anti bacterial.. combineing the 2 is a potent general treatment ime.

over medication can kill fish, but poor genetics can also kill fish... like i said my initial colony had a respectable die off... i just add the occasional oddball male, somtimes fancy strain, sometimes a male endler, sometimes more "feeders". some of the nicest guppies i have are feeders.

all feeders are generally kept in diplorable conditions, malnourished, inbred... and pretty much everything you dont do if you want healthy animals.

I keep the guppies in my sump, got like 200 one time and they never stop now, its great. Good luck hope you get it all figured out.
