Every now and then I get a few nicely colored goldfish in the bag of feeders that I purchase and I keep them for a while, anyone else does this?

LOL...Reading this post brings me back, wayyyyy----->back....As a novice in the 80's, I would dump dozens of "large" feeder goldfish in half cut 5 gallon Alhambra jugs....Sometimes I would pick out the orangexwhite crosses, but it got too stupid....I ended up "saving" half of my feeder group every month....After two weeks of staring at these feeders, (and runnning out of feeders), I would end them by feeding them to my Oscars, Red Devils, and Arowana......:naughty:

I don't buy them, I breed my own, too afraid of disease, & I read gold fish are bad for Oscars anyways.
I like that you can breed your own feedersI dont have the space or the time to be bothered with that but your feeders should be very good for the Oscars.

I buy and i raise feeders. But, when i do buy feeders it's Rosy reds all the way. not so much gold fish. If i do go gold fish i QT them for 2 months.

I'm kinda partial to the orange ones with the black trim though I've been told that if they live long enough and grow out the colors will change.I have never kept any long enough to find out.

those were my favorites but yes they lose the black trim

I have another pond in the back with the shubunken koi and I have one of those in the front now. My front pond I usually have to worry about the cats and raccoons. I have 2 dogs that are always in and out in the back nothing goes back there. When I end up with too many goldfish I'll weed out the uglier ones and feed to the RES.

I bred feeder guppies and they are fun when i was just 13 years old. Now i keep eye on feeder tanks for the surprises such as bluefin killifish, seminole killifish, green sunfish and sometimes young green swordtails. Once a year my lfs sometimes get feeder mosquitofish and feeder mollies. I prefer the rosy red from bait store than ones from pet stores (the ones from bait shop are bred in Minnesota and are hardy & thickier bodied) I love the koi pattern on the rosy reds from bait shop...cant wait for ice fishing so I could get these koi rosy reds as they are only avaivable in the winter. I kept rosy reds, feeder goldfish, feeder ghost shrimp and feeder gambusia in the past.
