I just recently started breeding my own rats to use as feeders for my snakes and was wondering how many others here do the same. Does anyone have any pics of their setups? Right now all I have are a couple aquariums.

I used to but got tired of live rats in my house. I used mostly wire cages.

awww, shame i dont still speak to the guy, but because he had 200+ snakes, he bred his own food. he had his garage FULL of lab cages and HUGE aquariums, tha im presuming he had specially built. he fed them on pig pellets. he had everything, rats, mice, multis. bloody amazing, but stank the place out lol

Im just starting to breed mice and rats again because all my pet stores that had feeders closed down. Last time i was breeding rats i used wire cages but there so expensive im using clear storage bins with holes drilled in the top and sides so far there working good.

I tried that but they started chewing around the rim. I am just planning on sticking to breeding rats - there is a stage of rat for pretty much everything I have right now. It's not too smelly so far - been using airwick plug in things.

I built this last year and produced a few hundred rats fastb4 i got out of breeding rats, much better than aquariums and such and easy to maintain.

I thought about a rack. I don't think there is anyone I can con into building one for me though. More than likely I would have to buy one pre-made.

What about a big ole stock tank...you could get plexiglass cut as a divider between males and females (or just let them breed willy-nilly). Depending on the extent of your breeding, aquariums are a pain in the ass to lift and clean...the bigger the tank, the heavier they are to lift around, and the smaller the tank.. the rats get hot, sweat, stink. Rats smell tons better when they are in the "open air" as opposed to a tank with no air flow. They tend to get respiratory infections in aquariums. Avoid pine and cedar shavings as well...same thing, respiratory infections...

Right now I have more of a smell issue with the open air cages than the aquariums. Everything that I have put these guys into that is not either glass or wire they have found a way to chew a hole into it. The biggest tank I have is a 20, no lifting required to change bedding, use a litter box scoop and just scoop it out. Right now I have 27 rats. I've used pine shavings with just about every rodent I've ever had (sometimes substitute for aspen, just depends what is cheaper that week). I have heard it can cause respiratory infections but haven't noticed any ill effects (no sneezing, wheezing, runny noses, etc). Stock tank wise - I don't think that would work because I would still have to separate pregnant females so would still need bins/tanks to separate them into.

I would like to go the route of a rat rack but I would have to shop around to find one that is a reasonable price or convince someone to build me one. If anyone has any links to some that you know are durable/good deal let me know.
