I just purchased a 15g tank setup today after all the paranoia I've been having over parasites. I set it up using 15g's from my 90g, and also took out one of my 2 month old carbon filters from the Emperor 400 on my 90g and put into the 15g for seeding.

My guess here is that this tank should be cycled in about 2 weeks? That's my hope at least.

The plan there after is to use Dr. Fishwell's Salt during water changes of the 15g, and of course prior to putting in there what I am going to put in there (which is going to consist of Guppies, Rosey Reds, and Chub/Shiner minnows). They stay in quarintine for 2 weeks, and then be feed to my Muskies.

I'm going to double it as a hospital tank in case of Ich or someting else arising. I'm beginning to become a believer in salt with freshwater systems as all the reading I am doing out here, and hearing about from others is not posing many downsides.

you didnt have a quarantine tank? :WHOA:

jk, this is a step that a lot of people dont take, but i am a huge advocate for, my fish are valuable to me, so i take all the steps needed to protect them

plus, you can keep minnows and such on hand in case your LFS has a bad shipment, and less LFS runs
i agree..quarantine tanks are a must...i didnt quarantine my feeders and im pretty sure thats what killed my sm bass

It was your stories out here that convinced me to break down and spend the $150 bucks to do it. Granted I'll be eating bread and water until next payday, but at least I now have a way to sayguard the Muskies foods.

I probably should have posted this out in the Setup and Filtration forum, but you guys have been great, and most helpful.

Now let me ask you this. The water is from my main tank (the 90g) and I plan to leave the old filter lay at the bottom until next week when I switch another old one out of the 90g. I'm just planning on doing water checks just as soon as my new kit arrives. From there (once the parameters are where they should be) should I begin to add salt before fish go in? On only when I do the changes in water to this smaller tank?

Thanks again you guys

very small amount of salt, or else the fish will freak when you drop em in

from there, add as much as you need

For a 15g tank what would you consider to be a small amount? A teaspoon of the salt mixed in with the tank water in a cup and then dunked in a few times?
