Howdy,

Snake owners know not to leave rats in with their reptiles when the snake isn't hungry, because a hungry rat might chew on a lazy snake.

Well, similar situation here? Not sure! One of my pirayas has open wounds on the back, must've been a fight/flight that caused him to scrape along driftwood or so. Long story short, it's been exposed flesh for well over a week now. Not infected, no fungus, just exposed piranha fillet if you want to call it that.

This morning, I noticed my Endlers were picking on that piranha's back. The P stayed still and let it happen.

Now I am wondering if it's a rat & snake situation, or do the Endlers provide a service like "medicinal" maggots, i.e. keeping the would clean? Let me tell you, it's odd to watch a dozen 0.5'' fish graze on the back of a footlong predator...

I've been thinking that I might lose that fish one way or the other. HITH has gotten better in all fish except that one (3rd round of treatment now in not quite 1 year's time). Then I've been thinking about setting up a spare 75 gal as quarantine tank. Not sure, but it's touch just to watch.

Theories/suggestions welcome and appreciated.

i would move to him to the 75 to treat him
and i would change the water with stress coat to help him heal.
ull also save some money sence its a smaller tank.
i also use vita-chem on a regular. DONT GIVE UP! its been hard for mine[piraya] to get right but i c day light
and the fish is pricelist with all u have invested.

Thanks for the encouragement.

My concern is that, once removed from the pack, I won't ever be able to reintroduce the fish to my shoal. It's the one on the bottom of the hierarchy right now...

I treat w/ Metro+ but found Kent Zoecon to be better than VitaChem.

Tough situation. Glad to hear you are hanging in there, not giving up. They're absolutely great fish, but unique amongst piranhas with their susceptibility to HITH....

Good luck, hope these guys return to mint condition. I doubt those little fish are causing damage though, unless they were scale eaters/fin nippers etc.

K, sorry to hear about that man. I don't think the endler will do any harm, probably just doing what those "medical" maggots do but if the wound stays unhealed for a extend period of time then it's best to isolate the fish.

Thx guys !!!

Check out Neo's write-up in the Articles forum. DIY overflows are so easy, I was surprised. :)
