have an empty 10 gal that i think im gonna use to breed feeders for my 225 gallon. stock list will be: silver aro, 2x florida gars, 2x pbass, motoro ray and 2x bichirs.

have everything else ordered except the pbass and the bichirs so want to set up my 10 gal soon to start for feeders. will be feeding them feeders however so often as a treat.

so for the stock list and best feeder/bredder wise. what exact fish should i pick up for this task and how many? .. also what should i do to the ten gallon to make it hospitible for the breeding .. need all the advice!

thanks guys

You could breed most any of the "feeder" type of fish in your ten gallon fairly easy. If it were me I'd pick up a 20 gal for around 40 bucks and breed Cons, very easy and they will breed in just about anything.

If you had a slightly larger tank you could breed convicts (I'm doing it in a 15gal). They're incredibly easy to breed and care for the young.

With a 10 gal you could do something such as guppies or mollies.

yeah well i already have the 10 gallon so i'm probably going to stick with that rather then buying something else. so convicts wouldn't be fine in a 10 gallon just to breed?

and as for guppies or mollies etc .. what would i have to do to the tank? just set it up and they'll breed no problem? if i go with like mollies for example . how many would i get etc? .. looking for all the answers!

I really don't think a 10 gallon tank will give you enough fish of the size you want to feed fish that big.

I have a 30gallon for guppies. I put 6 adults (3m, 3F) in it last April and am now able to remove 6-8 young adults a week. In order to do that, I have 75 or 80 juveniles cruising around. You could not have 80 juvie guppies in a 10 gallon tank with out the adults eating them.

1 guppy 1 inch long a day is not much of a feeder for a tank full of predators. And that is all I am getting out of a 30 gallon tank.

Mollies grow bigger, but they eat their fry, you would have to have separate tanks for the adults and the fry.

You could turn a 10 gallon tank into a cricket breeding bin, but I don't think you can breed enough "feeders" to make it worth your time in it.

You could probably buy 2 or 3 females and a male....wait 2 weeks feed the male. After that first round of fry is born (2 more weeks) you could then feed the adult females to your tank. The fry will be adults and ready to breed again in about 2 months, meaning that 3 months later you will have more fry. And during those 3 months you can feed or or two fry a week to the big tank. Its not many feeders, but its all you are going to get from a 10 gallon tank.

yah well for now all my fish are only 4-5 inchs (wont stay like that for long) but defiantly for a while 1" fish will be fine. if i could get like 6 a week thatd be fine .. they'd only get live food once a week-ish anyways. and in your last paragraph what fish are you talking about?

dirt.. and earthworms... not that a 10 gallon is ideal.. I prefer a tupperware bin.. But a steady supply of earthworms would be my best advise. guppies/mollys/platies/ect even cons won't supply you with many feeders to really make it worth the effort. It is still a tank to maintain. and poor husbandry of feeders is as bad as buying from the LFS and tossing them in. I have 2 10 and a 20 w/ feeder breeding set-ups. and they suppliment my QTd feeders. guppies/mollys/platies are what I breed. and My Oscar and eels would demonlish my entire breeding colonies in one sitting if I threw them all of the fish.. and they'de still be begging for more. Your stock list.. not really even close to supplimentation... I keep my feeders set-up as low light planted tanks. and I enjoy seeing them.. the extra live food is a bonus. tbh to even come close to breeding enough to "suppliment" your likeing looking at a stock-tank trio set-up to maintain a breeding colony and produce enough fish to satisfy those monsters. yes just as a snack even.

if you want to set-up a guppy tank ect as a fun side tank and toss the extra fry for the monsters. by all means go for it. I enjoy my lil' tanks. But don't have any illusions it will "pay for itself" with feeders.

fairly simple, some cover for the fry to hide in a a 1m/3f ratio on live bearers or a pair of smaller cichlids. and you'll have a breeding colony in a month or 2. also make sure to keep a good filter and keep up on water
changes.

EDIT: and in that time span your babies will be using those fry as tooth picks. Your babies will likely double in size the first month.

thanks. yah i'm not looking to really get much out of the breeding tank. just something to do with my 10 gal tank that also gives my 225 a treat every so often. what fish is best that breeds alot but also can put on a little bit of size so my fish will enjoy them. are mollies my best bet that way?

actually on this note .. i forgot about my w/d .. its a 50 gal tank im using for my filtration. ive heard of people using this to keep fish in. how does that work? maybe let them breed in that then put the fry in the ten gallon? how does it all work?

For a tank that small, guppies. Keep in mind that 6 months down the road, you will be harvesting at max 2 or 3 guppies a week.

As far as using your sump goes...it actually sounds like a good idea, but I would worry about current. How much current will these guys be facing. They can't put any energy into growing if all their energy is spent swimming.
