For a tank that small, guppies. Keep in mind that 6 months down the road, you will be harvesting at max 2 or 3 guppies a week.

As far as using your sump goes...it actually sounds like a good idea, but I would worry about current. How much current will these guys be facing. They can't put any energy into growing if all their energy is spent swimming.

yah true. i dunno. lots to think about. anyone else got any ideas? i think guppies sounds like they would be my best bet
