feeders for sens

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 10g which I breed platys and guppies for my tat and barracudas. They are easy to breed jut need a male and a few females. Very easy to sex. Also you will need some java moss or something for them to hide in. I would pick platys over guppies as they get larger and when your sens are bigger the small guppies will only be an appetizer.

a bunch of guppies in that 29 with some floating low light plants for the babies. or some other live bearer. from my experience with cons you'll have to wait for them to get a decent feeder size with 2 or 3 tanks for the fry so they can growout to a decent size, IMO.

there are lots of live-bearers that yield a decent size baby right from birth besides guppies. search ameca splendens. i have those and guppies in a 29g. but my feeder breeding days are over the 29 is now a QT tank for a datnoid. from now on i'm just going to buy feeders and QT them for 2 weeks before feeding. if i even decide to use them again.

wow, thanks guys.. and after much deliberation, i think i'll go wit anne's idea, guppies.. huhu.. thanks again guys!!

Interesting... Both are fairly easy to breed, right?

What would you recommend I breed for feeders in either my 29g or 40g? I just want your opinion... It's definately valuable to me. ;)

although I am not Anne. I have a 7x3x3 tank for breeding around 5000 mosquito fish.Mosquito fish are the way to go my reasons for this

Don't eat their young so much.
Come in Varied sizes.
Cheaper
Less appetite
Hardier

I would suggest you put around 500 or 600 of them in you 40g. They won't be the best of best condition but they will breed easily all you have to do is gut load them 6 hours before feeding them to the fish.

By all means... Thank you. That's actually a pretty good idea too... I've never seen mosquito fish sold around here, but I can always keep checking.

I shouldn't have worded my other post that way. I didn't mean I wanted "JUST" her opinion, I meant I was just wondering her opinion. Again, thanks.

I was considering swordtails or something similar... or... *cough* My Angelfish started breeding last week... They ate all the eggs, but I'm sure they'll do it again. I was hoping to raise only a few of the fry if they ended up being successful.

I don't think I'd have the heart to feed them to the bichirs though...

If you have a tank that you can keep only a breeding pair of convicts in, they'll work just fine. I breed convicts in a 29gal to raise some treats for my green terror. Just use them before they reach 1 inch and they're easy eating for most predatory fish. Another thing I used to do is buy about 20 feeder guppies, they're only 10 cents apiece where I live. Let them drop the fry in a 20 gal with plenty of hiding places. In a couple months time you will be amazed how many fish are in there. The substrate of my feeder tank looked like it was alive most of the time!

they pretty much look like guppies. As for convicts you need to feed very young fry
as the dorsal fin has stiff spines if swllowed the wrong way the can lodge in the bichirs throat(not good).Guppies and other livebearers lack these. As for buying quantities of hundreds then crowding them into a tank you haven't adressed the raising your own you are simply QT'ing them.Get a cpl dozen guppies feed them well
and you should be butt high in them in a cpl of months-Anne
