Feeders pretreatment. What should I do?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you have easy access to platys and don't mind the project, you could breed the platys resulting in completely healthy fry you won't even have to worry about treating with medication (other then w/ the initial breeding stock) if you go w/ 1 male to 4 females they should have fry about every 3 weeks, and in increasing numbers as the female has more fry after initially giving birth a couple times.

or what I did before the breeding would be to go into the LFS and find a platy or molly that looks really really pregnant (big belly, gravid spot) and put her directly into the QT, let her have her fry (in a breeder box) and then leave the fry in there for a couple weeks, release them w/ mom and treat them all for parasite, feed mom to the preds and grow the others out till they're good feeders and do it all again.

if you don't want the project then id go w/ oddballs advice, QT, medicate w/ whatever is good available around you (which you have figured out) gut load and feed.

either way will result in healthy preds but I find controlling that aspect of their food intake pretty fun, making sure the platys or mollys are as healthy and fat as possible before feeding to the preds. another good thing is they eat algae (platys and mollies) so you can put a bunch in and they'll clean up before being eaten

Cold clean water and good food are all i use. Most shops dont feed their "feeders" and even terrible batches have always turned around for me within a week or so with good care. Sometimes i use vitachem brand supplement in their food but u dont need anything too extensive to get feeders in better condition. Keeping them cold is very important imo.

Hi Buffalo...I would love to "produce" my own feeders, but i'm little concerned about the time that alevines will take to grow larger and my demand of food. I really don't have knowledge about feeder cycle to project a schedule that will fit my needs.
How many platys or mollys I will need to have a constant supply of feeders..20 feeders twice a week per example? I don't have any idea.
Hi wed, I'm using vitachen and flake food. Why cold water? How much cold?
Is it a reef catshark in your avatar?

Thks guys

it depends on how many you want to produce, you can expect babies w/ platys within about 20 days, and then they should go into their own tank to grow out to a good couple inches (only takes a month). or if your fish aren't large, guppys breed faster, in about 2 weeks but are smaller.

you would still need to get feeders for a while while you start the breeding project. but after that it should be pretty easy to get a good cycle going

you should expect about 20-40 fry maybe more from platy, possibly up to a hundred w/ fancy guppy. to feed em just crunch up flake really fine and it works great. so I would say if you needed 20 of them 2 times a week, then id go with 8-12 females and one male. once they are inseminated they store sperm and just are pregnant again afterwards, so the male should be able to handle all that. that way if they are on the smaller side you can just drop 30 instead of 20 in the tank

Convicts work great if you want to breed feederfish, they are cheap, easy to breed, breed fast and frequently, and don't get very big. Jags are also good if you have a large enough tank. Jag spawns can have over 1 thousand fry.

^^yes convicts are great if you can find ones large enough to differentiate sexes, if not you have to grow out some and hope you have a male and female
