I would stay away from the beefheart it is very high in protein and may constipate the ray.

My recipe is as follows

6-8oz tilapia
6 handfulls whatever pellet you like I use NLS, sinking cichlid gold, and the green sinking cichlid can't recall the name
1 capfull garlic guard
1 capfull seachem nourish freshwater vitamins
2 cups hot water
8 packets of gelatin

I blend up the pellets first then add the rest. I usually mix the water and gelatin before I add it as well

Gonna make this now, but I don't have the freshwater vitamin stuff, or the garlic stuff... can I use crushed garlic or garlic powder?

Ya I do. I used minced garlic for mine. Ive not used powdered garlic, I think minced would be better.

Ok, so I made the food... hope I did it right.. haha.

I used krill, massivore, silversides, bloodworms, and minced garlic.

I took my electric uhm... blender thing... forget the name.. you can use it to make salsa and stuff like that.

Mixed it all together.. I left some out without the gelatin, and did the turkey baster. He went nuts! He was attacking the baster half way up the tank after he found out what was in it!

Gonna try the gel on all of them tomorrow.

cool, keep us posted..

Great was going to help, but the end u got it all. Hope too see pics of him and maybe a feeding video? :D glad u r doing well usually rays r hard to keep. People tell me that it is a 70 percent chance they die, but i dnt think so i think it is a 70 percent if u feed him a little like a arowana food double that then done and clean water. That is it. Then it lowers it down to wat 30 percent chance it dies from infant. :) rays r expensive tho. Anyone know a good place to buy rays pm me tho

I got my small WC guy for $125.

Got my 2 larger ones WC for $150 pc.

I keep Motoros.. they aren't that expensive.

I have no trouble keeping the others at all, just needed to get the little guy to eat.

Wow, glad to here such great results.

In regards to using the gelatin... there is another option called AGAR (comes in flakes and powder form mostly) and its very similar to using gelatin but it is derived from seaweed and algae and does a better job of "gelling" stuff up and might give the end product a more "flesh" like feel, which I am sure most predatory fish would prefer. Most health food stores carry it, might find it at wal-mart, or it is easy to find on the net. It is used for many things but one main use is, it's what is used in petri dishes for lab cultures. The main reason it is used in lab culture is that most cultures are incubated at temps around human body temp and other gelling agents like gelatin would start to melt. I am thinking agar would be better for the fish food application because most people are probably heating there tanks above room temp and I would think gelatin would start to melt and break down in the tank water and make feeding more messy than if agar was used and like mentioned above it would stay "harder" and would do a better job of simulating flesh.

Just my thoughts, not sure if people have any problems with using gelatin in this application but thought I would toss that out there for anyone interested.

It all depends on the way you use the gelatin. I have had only one batch where the ratio of gelatin to water was off and it was breaking apart on me and not very palatable. I have been considering giving agar a try but gelatin is just easier for me to find.

I was thinking the agar may have some health benefits as well I may look into that. I am not sure how a rays digestive system would be able to deal with vegetable matter or if they would just pass it right through. I know for sure that with gelatin the waste is very managable.
