Feeding a new ray - little help?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's a gorgeous 7" jar - didn't realize they were so aggressive. Replaced an 14" silver aro that jumped. I'd be tempted to put him in with my 17" pbass - would prolly swallow the jar in a flash (wouldn't do it really but he pisses me off!). Struggling to find something the ray will eat.

If you want to know if he is eating then put him in a floating box inside the tank and if the food is not gone then you know he is not eating. When in the tank the other fish can eat the food and it's hard to tell how much if anything that it's eating. I train all my pups I raise to eat pellets in a floating box. Easy to control and watch what they are eating or not eating. Once trained then in the tank they go!

Thanks for the idea. Sounds great. He definitely checks everything out and appears to even chew some but he pushes the bits out behind him. He even pushes blood worms out. Are they known to chew at their food with a number of passes before they finally eat it?

image.jpgWeek 2 update - Appetite is good! Prefers bloodworms and black worms to pellets but I keep trying. The geos clean up pretty quickly but I mix crushed pellets in with the bloodworms.

Keep the gar it will be fine

Maybe try red wriggler worms cut into small pieces. The chopped nightcrawler may still be too big for the ray.

Haha, I was just about to say the exact opposite.
Make sure you are using Canadian crawlers rather than red worms. Even my adult retics refused red worms. I think they are too chewy and difficult to bite thru. The Canadians however are nice and soft. I had a newborn once munch on chopped Canadians before he was even a day old.

Some times they can look more pink than other times. Only get worried if it gets really red or if you see blisters, just make sure you don't have any issue decor or what in the tank as well.
