The wastes break down to sludge pretty quickly, if you want to stir it up off the bottom use a powerhead angled to bounce the flow off the bottom. Using small chunks of shellfish and fish like perch will reduce the ammount of waste produced as oppsed to an all eartworm diet. Check out your local discount grocery store and look for frozen bags of mixed seafood. The ones here sell a mix of clams, oysters, shrimp, pollack, squid, and octopus, as well as sometimes the artificial crab legs. This goes for $3 per 2 lbs. and works great for most predators. When I had my american eel (30") this was it's main staple.
