Hey guys, I am new to the oscar business and was wondering how much and how often i should feed him? Right now he is eating twice a day but only eats feeders and refuses the pellets. Any ideas on how to get him to eat the pellets?
If your O is small, and you don't like the idea of making him starve, you could try a frozen food (krill, bloodworms, shrimp, etc.) or even freeze dried foods (same types as frozen).
Often, fish that refuse pellets will gladly accept frozen or freeze dried foods as a substitute for feeders.
Very important IMO. I've found that very clean water (low nitrates), low stress, and a good diet is critical to prevent hole in the head disease. Feeders really aren't a good diet. Get him on a quality pellet and mix in some frozen food once in a while.
should be an easy task for ya. i feed mine new life spectrum pellets and frozen krill. and he eats everything else i put in the tank for other fish....bloodworms, brine shrimp, spirulina flakes and even eats some of the zucc and romane lettuce i put in for my pleco. imo feeders are the worst thing to feed.
pellets should be the staple of your oscars diet then supplement with frozen or freeze dried foods such as krill, shrimp, beefhearts, crickets earthworm and if you really want to feed him live fish breed them yourself. in the wild an oscars diet consists mainly of insects and crustacean. if your oscar doesnt want to eat pellets go the tough love way and only feed him the pellets if he doesnt eat them remove them after a few mins and try again the next day.eventually he will eat them. also small o's should be fed twice a day and when the reach maturity you should only feed them once every day or two.
