Feeding ants

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed superworms, red wigglers, mealworms and the stray cricket or other bug that I find in the basement.

I've also tried ants...some fish like the taste and others don't...

Any residual pesticides, etc. found on bugs and worms won't poison the fish (instantly kill them)...but could bio-accumulate in the fish over time. Unless you plan to eat the fish, then it's a non-issue.

Does anyone know of anyone who has seen a fish die from being fed a bug or worm that has residual pesticide or fertilizer on it?

Matt

Here in the south we have lots of ants. I use to feed mine the big black ants that got in the house. I never had one problem. The question I would pose is; If ants are being poisened in another location, do they make it over to yours? I mean, we're talking about a lower life form here. Any poison that gets on their "skin" should kill them quickly, that's what the poison is for, right? I mean, it's not like they can walk around for days with the stuff on them. I'm no expert, just sayin.

Actually, with ants it's a slow acting poison so they carry it all back to the nest to destroy the nest, so very likely yes.

Interesting.

I have never actually heard or seen of anyone's fish dying from feeding infected insects, but have always been told to stay clear of them.

Is your statements from own experience/research, or can you possibly post a link to the information where you have obtained it?

i feed my fish any lil bug i can find, and especially spiders they love those things,
ants seem pointless tho there so small,
also i can go out and catch some bugs in the woods thats about 5 ft away from my building so im not worried about pesticeds,
and aanyway i dont think any residual pesticide will harm your fish considering it didnt kill the bug in the first place!!!!!!!!

Personal experience and knowledge of science.

There are wives tales that perpetuate themselves in this hobby based on conjecture and opinion like:

- Garden hoses will kill your fish (I have been since the mid-1980s without incident)
- Black PVC / ABS will kill your fish (same)
- Feeding bugs and worms from your yard will kill your fish

Bioaccumulation is the build up over time of chemicals in an organism. Perhaps residual chemicals from bugs could build up over time in fish, but it's not going to kill them. It's the same reason that it's a bad idea to eat aquarium fish that have ever been treated with ick medication..

There are lots of stories of people feeding ants and other bugs to their fish without incident...and none (or very few) that I've heard about people's fish being instantly poisoned / harmed / killed from poison on a worm or bug.

I culture my own red wiggler worms but I don't hesitate to grab / wash off a worm I find in my driveway and feed it to my fish.
