Hi, I have a silver just over 2' and feed him every other day with smelt, sold frozen, from the local fish market. He eats from 4-8 at a time, depending on the size. In coastal Florida we also have bait shrimp (live or frozen white shrimp) and he gets these every so often, making sure the head and tail spines are removed, otherwise they are not shelled. He has been a great fish that has done well in a community tank with many other species, some as small as black tetras. It really pays to get them off live food, it makes them easier to feed and (perhaps) less likely to see tankmates as food!
