Feeding female bettas in community tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ugh Stupid fish. The bettas dove for the sinking tropical pellets while the others played with the bettas pellets at the surface.
I think I have my solution. The girls don't like the betta food but they DO really like blood worms. So I'm feeding everyone the tropical food, which the bettas take a bite or two of. Then while the tropical trio are scoring the rocks for dropped food I sprinkle some blood worms right in the faces of the bettas, who eagerly scarf them up. I've also seen them eating some of the cory's shrimp pellet. So I'm guessing they're getting their protein.

Blood works are not highly nutritious, so should be given sparingly, and not as a staple.
I would highly recommend you get New Life Spectrum Thera A 1mm pellets. NLS is renown for it's very high quality fish food. This would be all that you would need to feed all the fish in your tank. It has all the protein your first will require, so no need to supplement with additional protein. Give the other foods no more than once a week, just as a treat.

Good to know. Not of my other fish liked the blood worms so at least someone is enjoying a treat.

Ahhhhh too many choices

They will all work fine, but the community at 1mm will probably be best for you. Since you have cories, you would want the sinking. All the other fish will soon learn to go to the bottom for the food.
If you hang out on MFK long enough, you'll come to learn that NLS is the preferred fish food brand.

Just one food to feed everyone seems too good to be true but outs definitely easier than the range of pretty store crap I've been working with.

I tend to over feed with the "as much add they eat in x minutes" rules. Is there a rough number of pellets per 1.5-2 inch fish rule you could suggest?

Over feeding can be detrimental to water quality. Plus, a fishs' metabolism isn't like ours', so no need to do multiple feedings per day. For years now, I've only been feeding my fish once per day. All the food should be gone within a minute, not several minutes.
I also would like to emphasize the importance of water changes. I feel this is absolutely key to successful fish keeping. I recommend a water change schedule of at least 50% twice a week.

I only feed once a day but I really don't have a good feel for "gone within a minute" extra food is obviously going to be toxic in a closed environment. More decaying unbeaten food, more poop, plus overweight less hardy fish. But I can't seem to eyeball that "gone in a minute" thing. Wish there was a rough pellet count per fish rule of thumb

I used to give my full grown betta, three 1mm pellets per day. Your live bearers will want more, so perhaps 6 pellets each. Cories, about 4. It really is something that comes with experience. If anything, you should under free, rather than over feed. As long as there's some good everyday, no harm will come to your fish.
Hope this helps.
