If i kept feedin my largemouth, it would probably eat until it died!!...
the thing just kills and eats for fun!! :)

This is a good thread.... in my opinion power feeding is not a good idea in keeping healthy fish.. sort of like an old wives tale.. fish can only use the amount of nutrients their body can handle... everything else is waste... and the tank gets dirty faster.. clean water and lots of room help a fish grow more then food.... these three ingredients in combination is what tips the scales in a above average fish.. And let me tell you that is the #one mistake people do every day including me... but unless you want to spend all your nights doing water changes to counteract your overfeeding frenzy... do not power feed...

i personally stuff my jags... but they are small and need the protein ! oh and btw it depends on species too... carnivores need more food

i would say its not good to feed them until they bulge on daily basis. it probably causes alot of nutrients to not be absorbed and simply excreted, and makes more waste in the water. it can cause serious problems in fish like fancy goldfish and their scrunched up digestive systems.
im sure, very large amount of food taxes the animals system in someways.
humans digestion is most efficent being feed many small meals aday(this is for putting on lean body mass), personally i think its more then likely fish are that way too.

feeding large meals infrequently ends up in more body fat and less muscle.

remember just because something is natural, doesnt mean it is the best way.

I think it depends on the fish. If you feed a very small ATF it will buldge out. Or a Gulper cat. some fish just swell with food.

So I don't see it being a bad idea.

I agree with that. My bullhead catfish just has a big stomach. I can feed him 1 shrimp, not even a big one and he will bulge, it goes away in a few hours but that's just how it is.

I try not to feed until their about to explode. I think a daily small bulge that will go away before next feeding is totally fine. But a small bulge, that's it.

All depends on the species. I feed my Flowerhorn 3 times a day. My Ceylon puffer only once every 3-4 days, until his belly bulges.

+1

I feed my Oscar once a day, and not enough to see changes in his belly. But he's over 12" long and doesn't need many calories to get him through a day. On the other hand, my 2" Largemouth Bass gets two heaping bellyfuls of live or frozen food every day, and it seems to all be metabolized without a second thought. Catfish, too, and other apex predators that would typically run across a carcass in the wild and just stuff themselves silly probably can be fed this way as well, but I'd think any extreme bulging could be dangerous physically.
