I used to have a florida gar many years ago and I fed him whole cockle. he would come up to the surface and i would just drop it right next to his snout and he grew really well. I have the oppertunity to pick up a florida gar again and my pink tailed chalceus just died which leave top to mid area of my tank quite lifeless, I know gars aren't the most vibrant of fish but I have wanted to get one again some day and I see myself in a good position to do so (5'x3' footprint.)

My main issue is, how exactly do you feed them? will they hunt at night, or can they adapt to take pellets? The only reason I ask is because if I have to keep buying a supply of feeders I feel it will become too expensive. If there is an alternative staple other than feeders I would like to know,

What is your guys experience with this?

Talapia, smelt, shrimp, silver sides. Mine eat any thing. Including pellits.

make sure you get a bigger one.. and you shouldn't ahve any issue.. all my gar that are 12"+ took to pellets w/out much of a fuss. its when they are young that it can be challengeing. I would also get a bigger one because of the footprint.. imo that footprint is almost too big as funny as it sounds. I'de be wary of a smaller fish breaking its back in your tank. But a larger fish oughta be fine.

Its been 5 months and I still havent got mine pellet trained and at 13 cents a piece feeders arnt to expensive in my opinion. I wish you luck!

I already saw that thread, its such an ingenious Idea. so everyon I got a 16" gar today and hes doing great. I brought a HUGE frozen slab of silver sides to feed him.
anything you can recomend? feed him in the day, at night? should i wait for him to come up and then drop food near his snout? cause my other fish will literally suck down anyhing that hits the surface
