can a gar be trained to eat processed/commercial food?if yes, how?
i have a floridian juvie, only 4inches long.i want to put him with my other fish(juvie oscar, firemouth, and a senegalus)but i think they would outhunt the gar.

i did sort of the same thing you want to do. i have a baby gator gar in w 3 oscars (one is a friends so soon 2 oscars). you gotta watch the oscars with feeding. the gars are ambush predators so they try to sneak up on the food. im not sure about the firemouth but the oscars go nuts when i put food or feeders in the tank which makes me spend more time on feeding the gar. no big deal imo. also, i had a sen. i thought they were supposed to stay on the bottom (had lots of hiding spots for him) but i noticed he came to the top a lot (which i think i read on here its normal for small sens)anyway, i cant find my sen, someone ate him, which im guessing the gar did based on how the sen would kinda hangout at the surface, hence the gar sneaking up on him and having him as a quick and easy snack

indeed you are correct with the oscars and sens.that's why i thought that the gar would be outhunted considering they are ambush predators.
atleast my breeding pair of senegals is too big for the gar to eat.haha!
that's why i am wondering if they could be trained to take processed food,so that it's chance of getting to eat in a community would be higher.

I have two Florida Gars with 5 bichirs and 1 ropefish and everyone eats pellets :)

Is that what you were talking about? Pellets?

How long have you had the fish?

i'd do some research on
a-if mixing gars & your current tankmates if even a good idea in the first place
b-converting gars off live

Gars are not ambush predators. I'm not sure why this image is consistently being stated.

come to think of it,they do chase their prey, only slower and in a cautious manner.atleast that's what i observe in my small gar.sorry for the wrong assumption.
