Gars are not ambush predators. I'm not sure why this image is consistently being stated.

what are they then? they certainly don't hunt the way faster fish(bass, pikes or characins, to name a few) do. from what i've observed, my gars tend to stalk their prey. is that not considered ambush?

stalking prey isn't necessarily ambush predation...however, i believe gars (as with many fishes) are capable of using multiple tactics in prey capture including ambush predation and active hunting. the YOY of the year fish will often lie in wait and snatch food as it comes by, but these fish will also actively chase down prey. the main issue is that they are often pigeon-holed into one category when this isn't the case--

Exactly. The hunting method they use probably depends on the availability of food. In a tank environment where food is abundant, they just has to lie and wait for the food to come by. It will be another story if it is in the wild where competition is fierce.

iv actually read that gar can even use other fish as bait
