feeding issues with my redtail catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Catfish are one of the easiest fish to break on to new foods in my opinion due to them being like vacuums you should have no problems getting him on a new diet especially where he is so young still !!!
My redtails diet consisted of flake food, nls sinking pellets, massivore, shrimp, bloodworms, earthworms, salmon fillets, and once and a while I'd give him silver sides

When you feed night crawlers,do you put them in moist paper towels to clean them out? I' wanting to feed my small redtail night crawlers. However I heard that sometimes the night crawlers have chemicals from the growing farm. I have also heard that it upsets fish that eats them. Is this true ?

tigercat, I feed my RTCs night crawlers right out of the box and they are fine but if you want to be safe get a strainer and run fresh clean water over them before you put them in.
My RTC, TSN, and Hybrid all will hesitate whenever i change their diet to something new and unfamiliar. The way i get them to eat is that i turn off/change the lighting in the tank every time i feed so they know when it is feeding time and i feed them a little of something familiar first.
For instance... None of my fish like pellet food. So to get them to eat pellets i turn off the white light and leave on the led night light and put a couple beefheart cubes in with the pellets. They will seek out the beefheart first and then be hungry enough to eat the pellets.

I've kept quite a few red tails,I feed 1day fish fillet the next day catfish pellets an eventually he will get hungry enough to take the pellets.I currently have 1redtail,1tsn,1rtc x tsn which are all on pellet even my alligator gar eats pellet so keep trying.

Shrimp and fish pieces stuffed with quality pellets. RTCs generally aren't picky, but it might take him a couple days of not eating to try something new.

Don't be afraid to starve him for a week or two if that long is needed. He will take almost any and all foods. RTCs are opportunistic fish, which means they will eat any and all edible items when they are hungry.

Please look at my suggestions on page 2, bottom, of this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...ed-tail-turkey-hotdogs-as-a-treat-or-no/page2

agreed with these :)
