Hey my red tail baracudas and hajua gars always been picky eaters i feed them minnows but thats bad it just spreads sickness, so LFS said they give theirs shiners frozen fish, well I got some and put it in the tank none of the Characin touched it then it goes right to the bottom, do they usually eat this sort of thing?

This happens when u feed live. Kind of like drug and hard to break the habit. Unfortunately u will have to starve them a bit.

I would suggest try like floating krill in straightened out pieces. This will look easy to swallow to the fish and more appeasing. Then would try some pre soaked carnisticks. Slice those in half and eventually they will take.

I used to do this when I had gars and cudas. The gars are easier to break and will teach the cudas.

Will eventually break. Takes time. They will hit silversides too but after been trained a bit. Small sliver of pieces will do well.

Keep trying and will happen.

They should eat most fish. If all they eat is live you could try putting some shrimp, prawns or cut up pieces of fish(tilapia works well) on a piece of string ane float it around the tank. The fish will think its alive and go for it. Eventually they'll get used to the taste and sight of it and then you can start stuffing the food with pellets to start pellet training them

the fake silver pike gar hajua is taking pellets its the red tail i worry about

are these fragile or hardy fish usually? I AM SHOCKEd people keeping them with things like wolffish these fish arent aggressive or fighthers they seem peaceful maybe their speed keps them slive?

I HAD BAD BAD luck with young baby ones of red tail baracudas so i bought an adult this time was so expesnive like 100 dollars

Red tail cudas are a bit more fragile and easily spooked. Some species like pantanero are more hardy and aggressive compared to others.

Can be kept with other predators but likely temporary as will get outgrown and may become a snack.

It takes some time to break the live good thing but can be done.

Hey so much for being passive predator he lacerated my hajua gar and tore his nose off

Geez....they got teeth for sure!

The gar was almost the same size
I would expect that from wolf and tiger fish which is why I don't keep hajua gars have teeth also and can't be fierce in defending which is probably why he survived look like a cat raked its claws into him
