Building is fine. I've built several tanks over the years up to 2,240gals. I even had a 900gal plywood tank running for 17 years without a leak before selling it. And, it went another 8 years before I lost track of it.
With lumber, glass, and hardware costs lately, it's cheaper to buy mass-produced tanks up to about the 300gal range then to build them yourself. If you want to go bigger than 300, then building your own is a viable alternative to the expense of a shop-made tank.
