I was wondering on some different foods to feed my goldfish for a more varied diet, I give them worms but I was wondering if they would be okay with maggots? I always have some left over when I go fishing and I was thinking the goldfish would eat them. At least seems better than dumping them to turn into flies. Thanks.

I think maggots could work, but I would make sure that....

1. They are dead

2. It would be even better if you gut load them

Why dead, how do I gutload maggots? Rotting flesh? Do they even eat greens? Thanks for the help so far.

I would feed them a mixture of veg. and fruit as well as fish pellets. I think that the vitamins and minerals in these can transfer over to your fish.

I say dead or frozen because Ive HEARD of times where certain worms remain alive for awhile and attempt to chew themselves out of their predators stomachs.

I could be wrong regarding fish thou I have heard it happened to certain lizards.

By no means am I an experts on this, just my .o2

if where talking flys we encounter in our everydays lives, no, these maggots only eat dead tissue and nothing else.

thats hella creepy

sounds like certain botfly larvae. but they spend part of their lifecycle as parasites under the skin of living animals.

but i think you may have confused it with somthing else, i cant see a common maggot that eats dead tissue eat its may through living tissue out of a living organism.

Thanks Samurai, that's what I was thinking :P

Yeah Gr8Karma the thing about mealworms getting out is a myth, they don't really do that. And I did think maggots only ate carrion so no way are they getting gutloaded, besides if you dont use them for a few days they pupate and turn into flies.

Thanks everyone.
